The event includes large scale multi-venue exhibits, a building sized 3-D projection mapping, educational seminars, student and community competitions. Featured artists include:
Master Photographer Jerry Uelsmann is world renowned for pioneering the art of multi-layered photo montage imagery. His photographs can be found in the permanent collections of some of the top museums in the country, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York. Jerry was also named among the “Top 10 Most Collected Photographers” by American Photographer.
Maggie Taylor is an award-winning and published still life and digital image artist. Her art is produced by scanning objects with a flatbed scanner and then layering and manipulating them into whimsical surrealist images. Her work has been exhibited throughout the U.S. and abroad and is in numerous public and private collections worldwide. Maggie and her husband Jerry Uelsmann are residents of Gainesville, FL.
Elena Vizerskaya is an Ukrainian surrealist artist/photographer and our celebrated “Snap! Discovery of 2011”. We were thrilled to exhibit her extraordinary and provocative work (being shown in the U.S. for the very first time at our event).
The Dan Eldon Project. This exhibit was presented by award-winning, globally revered Kathy Eldon, mother of world famous Dan Eldon, a young creative reporter who was tragically killed on assignment in Somalia in 1992. Kathy turned her grief into an inspiring art exhibition celebrating the use of creative expression as a powerful vehicle for social commentary and activism. Her presence at Snap! included the celebrated Dan Eldon traveling exhibit, lectures, book signings and workshops with students.
As a 30-year industry veteran, Pulitzer Prize winning photographer, and Sony Artisan of Imagery, Brian Smith is known for capturing bold, graphic portraits of famous celebrities, athletes and executives, which have been used in corporate advertising and have graced the covers and pages of hundreds of magazines, including Sports Illustrated, ESPN the Magazine, Time, Forbes, New York Times Magazine and British GQ. Images of celebrities captured as part of his arts advocacy campaign, ART & SOUL (made in collaboration with The Creative Coalition) was previewed at Snap! Orlando. The campaign serves to focus attention on the importance of arts funding.
The Murder City Project. This powerful and art-noir photography series from local artist and former photojournalist Barry Kirsch was created in response to the cultural apathy created by media desensitization and glorification of violent crime. This compelling 24-image exhibit reflects the nondiscriminatory way violent crime impacts everyone, regardless of economic status, race, religion, nationality or age. (A percentage of proceeds from this exhibit benefited Crime Line of Central Florida).
Coolife is the still life photography team of Pauline Rochas and Carole Beaupré. Through a creative and elegant lens, Coolife produces extraordinary photographs with engaging, original imagery. To photograph an object as something unique and give it life is the team’s singular vision. Over the years, Coolife has garnered international recognition as a result of their campaign work for luxury brands as well as for editorial work for: The New York Times Style Magazine, Condé Nast Traveller, Wired, Details, Maxim, and more.
April 2011 marks the 25th Anniversary of the catastrophic Level 7 nuclear accident at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the Ukraine, still considered the worst nuclear accident in history. American photographer Jim Krantz (2010 Lucie Award Winner for International Photographer of the Year traveled to the Ukraine to photograph this stunning and haunting photo essay about the forgotten inhabitants of Chernobyl’s Forbidden Zone.
The Historic Preservation exhibit. The City of Orlando has produced the popular Historic Preservation Board Calendar since 1991 and each is an exceptional depiction of Orlando’s treasured historic resources. The photos in each calendar are selected from submissions from community residents as part of a photo competition. (Above: Nancy Jo Brown – Parramore, cover for the 2011 calendar).
Each year, as part of the celebrated Red Chair Affair event, local artists are challenged to capture a photographic image that creatively incorporates the iconic ‘little red chair’. This exhibit, curated by Director of Orange County Arts & Cultural Affairs Terry Olson, highlights the best of last year’s photos and offers a sneak peak at this year’s beautiful, performance-themed submissions. 100 Portraits — 100 Photographers. 100 Portraits — 100 Photographers will be projected during Snap! 2011. This digital exhibition was created to share the work of artists with an international online audience. Since launching in early November 100 Portraits has been viewed by more than 54,000 visitors from 24 countries and the project has been featured in Wired Magazine, The New Yorker, National Public Radio, aCurator.com and The Washington Post.
Lauren Marsolier. Lauren Marsolier is a French artist and photographer whose work deals with the psychological experience of transition, a particular mental phase when our perception parameters change.
