Nostalgia

Snap! Downtown Gallery presents ‘Nostalgia,’ featuring selected works by Douglas Kirkland, James H. Black, Alicia Soltani, and Isabelle Chapuis, including photographs of Audrey Hepburn, John Lennon, Martin Scorsese, Tony Bennett, and Coco Chanel.

Douglas Kirkland is a prominent photographer best known for his tenure with Look Magazine where he achieved fame for his 1961 iconic image of Marilyn Monroe, captured for the magazine’s 25th Anniversary edition. He shares some of the most captivating celebrity portraits culled from his prestigious 50-year career, including uncommon images of Audrey Hepburn, John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Charlie Chaplin, and more. Kirkland’s fine art photography work is in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian, the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Eastman House in Rochester, and the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles.
James H. Black is an award winning, Scottish born photographer who has captured beautiful images that are both historically poignant and personally introspective. His pictorial work records simple human endeavor while embracing a comfort and a calm that is undeniably captivating. As a GI in the U.S. Army and a resident photographer for the “Stars and Stripes” newspaper during the mid 1950’s, James was assigned to document America’s occupation of Germany and Europe’s revitalization in the aftermath of World War II. His mission was to seek-out and showcase the good found throughout its spirited community and to provided an ease and hope for soldiers continuing to fight for the civil liberties of humankind. The simplicity and gentleness of James Black’s work resounds his own personal belief that “the art of photography lies within the ability of capturing something beautiful and the process of revealing it to another.” ~ James H. Black.
Alicia Soltani is a photographer based in Orlando, Florida who uses film as an instrument to create dreamlike images. In her featured experimental series, she soaked her 35mm film in a wide array of concoctions (from drain cleaner to carrot juice) prior to shooting the roll. The results are organic and fascinating.
Isabelle Chapuis is a French photographer who offers a delicate organic perspective to fashion and beauty imagery. Isabelle was the recipient of the ‘Prix Picto de la Jeune Photographie de Mode’ and her work was published in Citizen K, M le Magazine du Monde. She has shown in galleries in Paris, Hong Kong and China.
