People didn’t know what to make of Patrick Kahn four years ago when, after moving from Los Angeles to Orlando, the French-born publisher, advertising executive and photography buff tracked down city leaders and volunteered to help the region develop a more sophisticated image. But unlike a lot of big-talk, big-city types, he followed through. He created an annual photography festival, Snap! Orlando, that attracts prestigious photographers from around the world for exhibits and seminars to boldly increase the visibility and appreciation of the photographic medium as a significant cultural art form. Kahn’s enterprise now has a permanent home in a converted movie theater on East Colonial Drive.

Olivier Valsecchi’s Time of War will be making its U.S. premiere at this year’s Snap! Orlando in May, although, that wasn’t the original plan. Friend and French photographer Nicolas Sénégas introduced Olivier to Snap! founder Patrick Kahn, who initially wanted to present Olivier’s “Klecksography” series, a live performance he shot for the Hasselblad’s Masters Book last year. However, as Olivier explains, “I sent him a preview of the forthcoming series “Time of War” and he decided it belonged to this year “Motion to light” theme.” … read more

I’ve taken issue with the art-party model in the past. Whether it’s Art Basel Miami Beach or Snap! Orlando, the idea of scores of artworks packed into multiple venues and crowded by hundreds of partying art-lovers – who, as is normal at a fabulous social event, are paying more attention to each other than the work on the walls – seems fun, sure, but less than optimal for appreciating the art.
