“More than 40 years of photography and drawing went into Ballen’s style, its unique look documented in several books. Restricting himself to a square format and black-and-white film, Ballen is the king of closed spaces. ‘I think of the mind as a house of secrets and buried narratives,’ Ballen says. His exploration of humanity is not dissimilar to Samuel Beckett’s – a comparison that the artist encourages – in its sparely staged exploration of mental health and modern society”… read more

People didn’t know what to make of Patrick Kahn four years ago when, after moving from Los Angeles to Orlando, the French-born publisher, advertising executive and photography buff tracked down city leaders and volunteered to help the region develop a more sophisticated image. But unlike a lot of big-talk, big-city types, he followed through. He created an annual photography festival, Snap! Orlando, that attracts prestigious photographers from around the world for exhibits and seminars to boldly increase the visibility and appreciation of the photographic medium as a significant cultural art form. Kahn’s enterprise now has a permanent home in a converted movie theater on East Colonial Drive.

I’ve taken issue with the art-party model in the past. Whether it’s Art Basel Miami Beach or Snap! Orlando, the idea of scores of artworks packed into multiple venues and crowded by hundreds of partying art-lovers – who, as is normal at a fabulous social event, are paying more attention to each other than the work on the walls – seems fun, sure, but less than optimal for appreciating the art.
