Snap! 2011 Exhibit: The Anguish of Chernobyl (Jim Krantz)

In light of the dire nuclear incident currently unfolding in Japan at the Fukushima power plant, our forthcoming Snap! 2011 Exhibit, The Anguish of Chernobyl, now takes on increasingly somber relevance.

April 26, 2011 marks the 25th Anniversary of the catastrophic Level 7 nuclear accident at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the Ukraine, still considered the worst nuclear accident in history. American photographer Jim Krantz (2010 Lucie Award Winner for International Photographer of the Year) traveled to the Ukraine to photograph this stunning and haunting photo essay about the forgotten inhabitants of Chernobyl’s Forbidden Zone.

This compelling photography installation will serve as a powerful reminder of the historic nuclear fallout that occured, the gravity of the nuclear crisis at hand, and how critical of a role photography plays in society as a vehicle for cultural documentation and reflection.

Kirkland achieves Presidential stature

by patrick on February 12, 2011

Our friend and headliner of Snap! 2010 will receive the American Society of Cinematographers’ Presidents Award. In the 25 years that the ASC has been honoring outstanding contributions to the art form at its annual ceremony, it’s the first time the laurel is being given to a still photographer.

“I still haven’t quite recovered from the idea,” admits the 76-year-old Kirkland, gesturing toward a cabinet in his Hollywood Hills home where various plaques and statues are displayed. “Of all of them it’s the most important. It’s the closest you get to an Oscar…I’m very moved that they see me in this way.”
